This was the first project I participated in after the start of lockdown, and so the percussion, cello and harp parts were all recorded remotely. I wanted the score to reflect the cold aesthetic of the film, and gravitated towards metallic percussion instruments which could be used in unique ways. Sean Connors of Third Coast Percussion brought some really cool experimental techniques to the score, like holding an electric toothbrush to gongs and almglocken (a Swedish cowbell) to create long, rattling drones, and playing a vibraphone with a violin bow, with some aluminum foil on the metal bars for extra texture. To capture the humanity of the story, these cold tones are anchored by piano ostinatos and melodies.

To me, the film feels like a tone poem and I wanted to reflect that in the score. The entire score basically is composed in E harmonic minor. This scale is unique in that there are 3 minor second intervals, as opposed to only 2 in normal minor keys. The minor second intervals (often displaced by an octave) mirror the paradox of the main character Ghost in the film - she is so close to being human, and yet so far.
